Dazed & Confused

Founded by Jefferson Hack and Rankin- famous fashion photographer, Dazed and confused (known as Dazed) is a monthly British styled magazine founded in 1992. It covers fashion, film, art, literature and music.
It began as a black and white folded poster published sporadically. The magazine soon turned to full colour and was promoted within London club nights.
Dazed Film & TV was founded in 1999. A production company that would repoduce the first magsazine television broadcast ever. The one hour Renegade TV Gets Dazed, for channel 4. The Dazed Group, as it styled itself, launched the luxury biannual 'Another Magazine' in 2001. In 2005 the Group launced 'Another Man' which was a biannual fashion title for men.
November 2006, 'Dazed Digital' was launched, a new web based strand of the magazine that delivered film, fashion, art news, online events and music.
I wanted to look in to 'Dazed & Confused' as it is as well as i-D, more of an alternative fashion magazine- focusing on the youth of today. I think my ideas would work well with this magazine however I prefer the layout and style of i-D. If I have time I would like to try out a practice cover for Dazed&Confused however I think I will definitely use i-D instead.

i-D Magazine

I decided to take my research of i-D magazine further by finding out more information to help me with inspiration and ideas. i-D is a British magazine that is mostly dedicated to music, art, fashion and youth culture. Founded by designer and former art director Terry jones, i-D's first issue was published in 1980. It started off in the form of a hand-stapled magazine with the text produced on a typewriter. The magazine has evolved over time however has kept to the street style and youth central to every issue. This is one of the main factors that was important to me when picking the right magazine for the theme I wanted to go for. I think that this magazine is perfect for the kind of style of the shoot I plan to do as well as the article about my intended cover.
The magazine established a hybrid style of documentary which was called 'The Straight Up'. To start with the documentaries were of punks and new wave youth. They were found on English streets and were simply asked to stand against a nearly blank wall. The pictures - Of the subjects facing the camera and seen from 'head to toe' were a dramatic historical documentation and established the pose "Straight up" as a style of documentory picture making.
If you turn the i-D on its side, is used to signify a wink, a theme with the magazine. Every issue of i-D magazine has featured a winking model, or something covering the left eye. I am looking forward to experimenting with different props and my models hand to get an image that fits in to the i-D criteria.
I thought that working on an i-D cover rather then 'Vogue' or 'Elle' suited me as I would like to go down the street style. I had also researched in to 'Dazed and Confused' howvever i have chosen i-D as my final piece idea and will continue to work on getting the perfect magazine cover for i-D.
